Eros and Thanatos - Barbie on the Beach
Eros and Thanatos is part of an ongoing investigation into the ambivalent qualities of soft sculpture, which are anthropomorphic forms that elicit associations of both, eroticism and decay, depicted through abstracted bodily forms. The subtitle Barbie on the Beach gives the theme of sex and death a location: the beach seems to be a place of fun and leisure, a market place for trading eroticism and dreams, but it can also mean bodily exposure and embarrassment. The erotic poses of the bodily objects aim to elicit feelings of empathy with the desirable, but also pitiful creatures but simultaneously horror of recognising oneself in these aging, decaying and trapped creatures.
